Study Abroad Programs

List of Study Abroad Programs Directly Sponsored by Colleges and Universities in Virginia

Descriptions of these programs were written by the sponsoring institutions themselves. Please contact individual program officers or directors for the most up-to-date information.

1) Ferrum College:

Ferrum College has an exchange program with Pskov State University in Pskov, with options for language study and/or internship opportunities.

2) George Mason University:
Dianna Leonard, Program Officer, dleonar7@gmu.edu

GMU has a bilateral exchange program with the Higher School of Economics in Moscow, with options for Russian Language courses and others.

3) James Madison University:
JMU does not maintain a consistent Russian-based study abroad program, but will offer study abroad on an ad hoc basis according to professor and student ability and desire. For summer 2016, JMU offered two programs in Russia:

– Exploring Arts, Healing, and Health in Russia (Moscow, Sorochany, and St. Petersburg; contact: Kate Trammell, Program Director, trammekx@jmu.edu).

– Russian in Moscow (Moscow; contact: Elena Gopienko-Corbin, Adjunct Instructor in Foreign Languages, Literatures, and Cultures, gopienex@jmu.edu): Immersive language experience for intensive Russian-language instruction.

JMU will offer the Russian in Moscow program once more in Summer 2017.

4) Virginia Tech:

The Russian Program of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures offers a Study Abroad program in Latvia.

The goal of the program is to provide Virginia Tech students with an exceptional opportunity to enrich their college experience by studying a foreign language and civilization while being immersed in Russian culture in the European Union.

All credits earned during the study abroad program will count towards the Russian Major or the Russian Minor.

5) William and Mary:

This unique six-week summer program is designed to offer participants an opportunity to improve Russian language skills with 9 credits of Russian language and culture courses. The students are immersed in Russian culture as they live with Russian families and spend evenings filled with trips to the theatres, ballets, and operas, including the world-famous Mariinsky Theatre of Ballet and Opera. At least one semester of college-level Russian is required.

4) Sweet Briar:

In addition to its directly-sponsored study abroad programs, Sweet Briar also offers students a number of opportunities for study abroad throughout the world including, but not limited to, Australia, Austria, Bermuda, Canada, China, Costa Rica, Cuba, Czech Republic, Denmark, Greece, Guam, Holland, India, Ireland, Jamaica, Korea, Mexico, Mongolia, Morocco, Nepal, New Zealand, Panama, Russia, South Africa, Tanzania, Trinidad, and Tobago. Students should meet with the Director of International Studies for further information.

5) University of Richmond:

The University of Richmond offers opportunities for summer and semester study abroad through CIEE, its affiliate for summer study in Moscow or semester or year-long study in St. Petersburg.
